Two consonants can fuse into a single cluster when the first has no vowel before the next — a conjunct. Learn the half-letter rule, memorise the four special shapes, then build your own.

1 · The half-letter (आधा अक्षर)

A consonant loses its vowel — usually by dropping its vertical stem — to become half, then clings to the next letter. The vowel-stripping mark is the हलंत ( ् ).
